Atom C .... Great Showing At Provincials!!!
The Atom C team headed to Brampton the weekend of April 5th to attend the Provincials Campionships held in Brampton and North Toronto. The tournament consisted of 16 teams at the Atom C level.
This Lady Flags team showed up ready to compete.
The tournament started off with a 3 game round robin. The Lady Flags blanked the Woodstock Wildcats 4-0 to start the tournament. Later on they met the Owen Sound Ice Hawks in game 2. The Lady Flags had previously lost to Owen Sound in the Gold medal game at the Walter Gretzky tournament in February. The girls came out hard in this battle, but were down 3-0 at the end of the second. They fought back with 2 goals in the third, but Owen Sound held the game and the ladies lost 3-2. On Saturday the Girls met the Kanata Rangers in an intense battle. The girls went up 3-0 in the first period. Kanata came back with 2 goals late in the second, but the girls held them off to win 3-2. All Lady Flags took a skate with atleast one end to end rush in this game, it was pretty awesome to see. They placed second in round robin play next to first place Owen Sound with the top 2 in each group advancing to the elimination Quarter final game Saturday evening.
In Quarter’s they met season rival, the St. Thomas Panthers who the Lady Flags were 3-2-1 against during the regular season. St. Thomas came out strong popping one in early in the first period. The Lady Flags answered this late in the first and went ahead with 4:24 remaining in the second. The girls held the 2-1 lead to win the game and advance to the semi-finals Sunday morning.
In the Semi Finals the girls met the TCDGHA Rebels. The Lady Flags scored first at 8:23 in the first period. They scored again at the start of the second to make it 2-0. A minute later the Rebels scored to make it 2-1 and by the end of the second the score was 2-2. The rebels went ahead 3-2 early in the third and scored a fourth late in the third to make it 4-2. The Lady flags worked hard to try and even it up with a pulled goalie and were able to put one in the back of the net with 0:32 remaining, but couldn’t muster up a tying goal before time ran out and lost 3-2. The Lady Flags lost their chance at Gold, but still had one game to go with the Bronze medal game later that day.
In the Bronze medal game against Russell Castor, which was a longer game than usual, with 12-12-15 periods and a rare flood between the second and third, the girls came out working hard, but went down 2-0 early in the first. They got one late in the first and another early in the second to tie it 2-2. A couple minutes later the Russell Castor went ahead again with 2 goals in the second making it 4-2. The girls headed off for their first ever intermission, had some oranges, regrouped and came out and scored early in the third to make it 4-3. It stayed this way until Russel Castor popped another in with 2:45 and cemented their win with an empty net goal late in the third to make it 6-3.
The Gold medal went to Owen Sound, Silver to TCDGHA, and Bronze to Russell Castor.
The Lady Flags worked extremely hard and put it all out there in every game start to finish. Head Coach Kevin Slater said he is extremely proud of their season, dedication to their team and how much they improved over the course of the year. Kevin said this team was a pleasure to coach and their effort on and off the ice translate into 11 amazing girls that strive to do their best and never gave up.
Congratulations on a great season ladies!
